Engineering / Data / Discovery

Engineering experience.
Curiosity through data.

I’m Johann Ries, but please call me Hein. I bring more than 14 years of experience in electrical, instrumentation and automation systems, and I’m combining that experience with Data Science to build smarter solutions.

About me

I’m an Electrical Engineering and Data Science professional with more than 14 years of experience across electrical, instrumentation and automation systems in a wide range of industries.

As AI and intelligent systems became more prominent, I became increasingly interested in the data behind everyday engineering problems. I started exploring how to automate not only my industry, but also my own work, and eventually found myself studying Data Science.

My aim is to become the best automation engineer I can be—and perhaps one day create Hein 2.0: my replacement.

I’m no longer just a sparky seeking to power the world. I want to combine engineering principles with Data Science fundamentals to turn everyday problems into practical, intelligent solutions.

I’m continuing to develop my programming, data analytics and software development skills. Explore my portfolio to see what I’m building, or contact me about collaboration and services.

Learning by building

I don’t just study theory. I learn by building solutions.

Some projects begin with serious, well-defined problems. Others start with the phrase:

‘Wouldn’t it be cool if...?’

Those are usually the fun ones.

Whether it’s a capturing app, a website, a computer game or a simple story, I enjoy experimenting, building and learning along the way.

Anole

A community capturing and mapping prototype developed for the Houston Hackathon 2026. Anole explores how communities can collect and share local observations more easily.

A little room to experiment

Ideas in motion.

A short dungeon-diving game exploring programming logic, player choices, chance and simple game mechanics. It is one of my smaller learning projects and remains in development.

Why 2BTree?

One day, while looking for a name, I looked out at a tree in the park next door.

It reminded me of the biblical story of creation, where God described what He created as good. The Hebrew word is commonly written as tov or tob.

To me, it suggested ‘to-B’—2B. Together with the tree that inspired me, it became 2BTree.

Today, the name represents a good tree bearing many different solutions: each one unique, useful and interesting.
